Ghostwritten (Vintage Contemporaries), by David Mitchell

By the New York Times bestselling author of The Bone Clocks and Cloud Atlas

“A brave new book for a brave new world—fueled by a brilliant imagination and buoyed by beautifully descriptive writing.”—USA Today

A gallery attendant at the Hermitage. A young jazz buff in Tokyo. A crooked British lawyer in Hong Kong. A disc jockey in Manhattan. A physicist in Ireland. An elderly woman running a tea shack in rural China. A cult-controlled terrorist in Okinawa. A musician in London. A transmigrating spirit in Mongolia. What is the common thread of coincidence or destiny that connects the lives of these nine souls in nine far-flung countries, stretching across the globe from east to west? What pattern do their linked fates form through time and space?

A writer of pyrotechnic virtuosity and profound compassion, a mind to which nothing human is alien, David Mitchell spins genres, cultures, and ideas like gossamer threads around and through these nine linked stories. Many forces bind these lives, but at root all involve the same universal longing for connection and transcendence, an axis of commonality that leads in two directions—to creation and to destruction. In the end, as lives converge with a fearful symmetry, Ghostwritten comes full circle, to a point at which a familiar idea—that whether the planet is vast or small is merely a matter of perspective—strikes home with the force of a new revelation. It marks the debut of a writer of astonishing gifts.

Praise for Ghostwritten

“[Mitchell] has a gift for fiction’s natural pleasures—intricate surprises, insidiously woven narratives, ingenious voices.”—The New York Times Book Review

“Elegantly composed, gracefully plotted and full of humor.”—Los Angeles Times

“Unlike so many of the chroniclers of the twenty-first-century pastiche—an industry dominated by ad men and feature-writers, not novelists—Mitchell has set out to craft actual characters, not archetypes. The result is a dazzling piece of work.”—The Washington Post

“Mitchell deftly sketches each character to such a compelling extent that you become totally immersed. . . . His nine characters and their random but fateful interactions provide a playful, suspenseful foray into our ever-shrinking world.”—Entertainment Weekly

“An intricately assembled FabergĂ© egg of a novel, full of sly and sometimes beautiful surprises. . . . In an era in which much literary fiction is characterized by unearned ironies and glib cynicism, it’s hard not to be impressed by the humanism that animates Mitchell’s book.”—New York

“Gripping and innovative. . . . [Ghostwritten serves] to illustrate the strange interconnectivity of the modern world and the improvisatory nature of fate.”—The New York Times

“A daring novel, uniquely structured and just as uniquely compelling.”—The Denver Post

A must for any David Mitchell fan
By Nik
I pulled a copy of Ghostwritten off a shelf one rainy day in 1999 while I was wandering around a Barnes and Noble, waiting for a friend. I was engrossed in the story from the very first line. Now it seems like fate, which is thematically appropriate for a novel like Ghostwritten.

If you're not familiar with David Mitchell, or if you're only familiar with his more well-known books like Cloud Atlas, you owe it to yourself to pick up a copy of Ghostwritten. Not only does it feature some of Mitchell's most beautiful writing, but it's criminally underrated in the Mitchell oeuvre. Maybe that's because it's his first novel, maybe it's because he was an unknown in 1999, but whatever the reason, this book should not be slept on. For me, it was the start of becoming a lifelong fan, and two decades later some of the novel's phrases and descriptive language still rattle around my head. (Although I've re-read it several times over these past 17 years.)

Like most Mitchell novels, Ghostwritten isn't easy to summarize. Like Cloud Atlas, there's a theme of connectedness, but that's just one among many themes underpinning the narrative. What I can say is that it's a lot of fun and it's a joy to read.

Mitchell fans will also recognize many names here, including Neal Brose, Jason Taylor's opportunistic classmate from Black Swan Green; Subhataar, the ruthless Mongolian KGB/Yakuza enforcer who makes an appearance in number9dream; Luisa Rey, the Spyglass Magazine journalist who plays a pivotal role in Cloud Atlas; Dwight Silverwind, who pops up in the Ed Brubeck chapter of The Bone Clocks; and even a sort of proto-atemporal, a "noncorpum" who reincarnates in a way similar to Marinus, hero of The Bone Clocks and Slade House. There are others, but I don't want to spoil anything, and besides -- half the fun is spotting them for yourself!

Excellent writer, great book
By Jack Tucker
GHOSTWRITTEN
I give it four stars because this man, David Mitchell, is an incredible writer (but I liked Cloud Atlas so much more, which I give five stars plus). It takes a lot of concentration and effort to understand many of Mitchell's metaphors. The way he views the world is so different from any other writer I have read so far. When his characters enter a scene, they blurt it all out in a few, really tightly-woven paragraphs that paint a complete panoramic picture of the world around them. Like Hemingway, Mitchell succinctly describes everything: sounds, smells, movement, touching textures, feelings/emotions, and infinite views from the close-up to the telephoto-zoom; and that's how he often describes it, like looking thru a zoom lens at zero range, then pushing out to the lens' maximum distance.

Some of the characters in Ghostwritten reappear in Cloud Atlas as well as some of the symbolism. Brings to mind John Irving's early novels, which all had the company of at least one bear. I'm told Mitchell's other novels share similar connections (to one another, that is) regarding characters, metaphors, and the symbolism. I look forward to reading them as well. In summary, great book, great writer.

Tapestry of Lives
By PMR
Ghostwritten by David Mitchell is a rich, intricate tapestry of many lives all linked by ... well, I won't give away that mystical secret. I read and loved Cloud Atlas, which is constructed similarly, and I'm so glad I stuck with them both, especially when the central threads seem to jump around a bit. Never is the reader cheated, always rewarded. One at a time, each thread comes back into focus brilliantly, revealing patterns or truths I hadn't expected. However, if you're paying attention, the author does whisper a few hints, like tendrils of smoke curling up from a Mongolian campfire, so we may begin to notice the motifs appear in connected lives. Even once you get the secret, it gets better. When Ghostwritten concludes, you see how cleverly this delicious tapestry of life was created over so many lives unspooling in different places and times. This author's more complex Cloud Atlas has been made into a movie. I can't imagine how that could be done without animation, but I won't miss it. I read Ghostwritten on my Kindle Fire; couldn't put it down.
