This resource falls 2 cents short of a promotional piece! Very little substance with LOTS of advertisement, not to mention the price! If you want to pay for advertising this is the perfect book for you! Very disappointing! Steer clear of buying this one! I need a refund!!!

Nice to look at

The book has great images, but don't let that fool you. I am a college student majoring in ceramics and I have access to great facilities. So I decided to utilize them by going on a month long glaze test marathon. After testing 15 glaze recipes (Oxidation, Reduction, Low & high fire) with poor results I have given up on this book.
The only answer for the poor test results that I can think of is that the book was not written in the U.S., therefore the ingredients are different due to their location source.
Don't waste your time or $ on this book.

Huge disappointment

I bought this book because I confused it with another title and I was so disappointed with it I felt I have to warn others. Since I work with stoneware in the temperature-region of 1240-1260 °C I wanted a book with lots of stoneware recepies - but almost all stoneware glaze recepies in this book are adjusted to 1290-1300 °C !!! I don't know a single potterer that fires stoneware at those temperatures and have never heard of one either. I feel bewildered and cheated. And the book brags about having over 700 recepies but many of the recepies are the same with only a slight slight change in the amount of colouring oxides! There are also recepies in the book that are exactly the same.

I don't know how such a bad book could ever have been published to be frank.

Good if you already know something about glazes

I fire at Cone 5-6, and a lot of the recipes in this book are listed for use at Cone 10 and up. However, if you know something about glazing and use a glaze calculation program, you can see that many of these glazes are within Cone 6 limits (and, in fact, aren't within Cone 10 limits despite being listed for "domestic" use!).

Also, this book is useful insomuch as it provides color combinations in certain types of glazes, which could be applicable to any stoneware temperature if you know a bit about glaze formulation.

Lastly, if you do purchase this book, search the clayart archives at potters.org for the errata sheet.

Not a great book, but I don't regret purchasing a used copy.

How Awful Can A Book really Be? An Awful Book for Learning

I just can't tell you how frustrated I am at trying to learn Hibernate with this useless book.

I mean, I'm a patient guy, and I know technology well, but trying to learn from this book is brutal.

The examples are all over the place. In chapter 6, you get into annotations, and they've got this huge example with all these tables and garbage. All i want to know is how to do a simple one-to-many mapping between two tables - that's it! But instead, I get five classes with many to one, one to many, many to many, and all this other stuff that obfuscates the point so much, it's not even worth it.

And what's more, they deal with all this code and table references, but there's no ERD diagram to be found. I mean, where is it? I'm jumping from code to annotations to create SQL scripts - I want a simple ERD diagram to show me what's connecting where.

And this book makes no effort to explain. I loved this sentence "The mappedBy attribute is mandatory." Ok, could you maybe tell me what it means, what it does, or what it represents? Is that too much to ask.

Plus, simple stuff is just missing. A simple one-to-one relationship with xml is never demonstrated - just a pathetic description of the xml entry that doesn't describe at all how to do a mapping.

Plus, the book shoots page after page of definitions that look like it was pulled directy from the documentation, but no examples of how to use them in your code - just filler.

I really hate this book. The authors may know Hibernate, but they know nothing about teaching or helping someone understand a technology. I'm shoving this book in the garbage.

Poorly organized and poorly written

Most APress books seem to be well done. Sadly, this book is poorly organized and poorly written. There is only one example program in the book and it does not compile due incorrect instructions and code omissions. You can fix the errors without too much trouble and compile the project, but the example is too simple to use in your work. The rest of the book outlines (without runnable examples) other aspects of the Hibernate api, but a programmer is going to want complete example applications that run in order to get a good feel of how all the parts fit together and work together.

A better choice, if you need to learn the basics of Hibernate is the web tutorial given on the Hibernate web site. The tutorial is free and, unlike the book example, it works! The tutorial on the Hibernate site is well written and clear.

Lack of foundation combined with inadequately explained code samples

I purchased this book because the Hibernate documentation is confusing, poorly written, and generally subpar. Unfortunately this book was not much better. I was hoping for a guided introduction to the functionality of the framework, followed logically by instructions for configuring and ultimately using it. Instead, this book eagerly presents large code samples that are only partially explained afterward. If you learn best by first gaining a high-level understanding of how a framework operates, this book will surely disappoint. Note, however, that the authors are not entirely to blame. Hibernate itself replaces complexity with complexity, and is a waste of time for anyone who has a solid background in database design and a fluency in SQL.

This is the overview book you need.

This book is a rare find. It gives a comprehensive--but not sketchy--history of the Baltic States from their inception as territories of other powers through to their independence. I was impressed by how quickly I read through it without having to continuously look back to see what I'd forgotten. Each chapter leads logically from the previous. NO CONFUSION!! How's that for a find?
Anyone who wants to add the Baltic Region to their knowledge of history (medieval through modern) needs this book.

This was the best history of the Baltic States I have ever read. The author does an amazing job of covering the history of the Baltics in detail while still making it interesting. If you are looking for a great history of the Baltic States then this is the book for you.

A great book to begin a Baltic journey

Despite being under-200-pages, this is a rather thorough book to read before embarking on a larger journey either through a history of one of the Baltic states or any given historical era of the Baltic region. The author doesn't linger too long over the Iron Age and prehistoric societies, but goes almost straight to illustrate the Northern Crusades. Every chapter begins with a short summary. Thus, the book is easily navigable if, for example, you wish to focus more on the history of Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, rather than the time of the three Baltic states under Soviet rule. By the middle of the book you will have reached the wars of Baltic independence fought at the beginning of the 20th century. Hence, one could say that modern history of the Baltic region here is covered more extensively, than other historical time periods.

If one day travelling through the Baltic states you cross Latvian-Lithuanian border, then take a note that you cross the line, which in 1290 roughly corresponded a military frontline between pagans and Christians. The author has made a good effort to show that the Baltic region has never been quite homogenious and divergences in historical perspective of all three countries are obvious. The list of the sources for further reading at the end of the book is extensive, whichever of the countries and events you would prefer to explore any deeper.
