Fantastic!

I always made it a point in my life never to trust a guy with two first names, but Jim Earl has blown that notion into the netherworld. Mourning Remembrance is chock full of hilarious turns of phrase, socio-cultural insights and scathing satire. It's worth the price if only for the obit for "Frank Perdue, Chicken Choker."

Wickedly Funny Fake Obituaries!

You need this book. It radiates humor. It is the Huckleberry Finn of fake obituary books. It's loaded with facts that will stay with you, like the fact that Glen Bell, founder of Taco Bell "opened his first Taco Bell in 1962 using nothing more than some secondhand e coli and absolutely no concept of what real Mexican food tastes like." The jokes are tightly constructed and no two are alike (with some exceptions that are meticulously footnoted). Buy it. Read it. Carry it around with you. Turn to it during moments of uncertainty.

If you like mocking the dead (and who doesn't), then this is the book for you! Perfect for almost any occasion, "Mourning Remembrance" takes you back to some of the finest moments from Jim Earl's days on "Morning Sedition", and also keeps it current with some hilarious new Obits for such luminaries as Osama Bin Laden and the Segway scooter guy. A must-read for the sick, evil jerk in your life (or in your mirror). Makes an excellent stocking stuffer!

A Flashpoint in a Melting Pot

It is an interesting read, moves quickly and has a terriffic amount of NYC history that leads up to the Crown Heights riots.
Brendan Finn does a great job, any cop will appreciate his portayal of the situations and their outcomes. Good police bosses are given credit for making tough decisions, those politicians and police brass who failed to lead are also taken to task.
Finn offers unvarnished observations of the power srtuggle between the blacks and Hasidim in Crown Heights and some insightful chapters covering how the clubhouse politicians actually made race relations worse in an effort to harness the voting blocs.
Brooklyn cops, past and present will read the book and see the conflict as timeless.
Any student of NYC political history will be engrossed in the story. A well done piece of modern history.

Don't care if I do die, do die . . .

After reading "A Garden of Sand", I scoured the bookstores looking for more titles by Earl Thompson. Fortunately, I was able to find all four. Unfortunately, Earl died before he could write more. Perhaps, it's fitting that his books (which seem to represent a thinly veiled depiction of his actual life) died with him. I know of few people who could have survived the traumatic and dysfunctional life that Earl's main characters lived.
Caldo Largo was one of the last books that Earl wrote, however, it does not lack the verve and grit that permeate all of his novels. It tells of the life of a shrimp boat owner in Brownsville, Texas in the early 1960's.
Scenes and characters depicted in Caldo Largo seem so real you can almost taste, smell, and feel them. The plot line is nothing that fits any "formula" novel, unless you compare it with other Thompson novels. I could best describe Caldo Largo as a mix between Steinbeck's Grapes of Wrath with all the dirty parts left in, lots of fajita flavoring, and a little Shakespearean introspection (or psychosocial character analysis if you will).
I only wish I had kept all my Thompson novels. They're probably worth quite a lot now. I had to throw them out when I got married since my wife insisted they were pornography. But, if you get past all the sex, drugs, and violence, you'll actually appreciate the books finer points like its wonderful descriptive writing, character development, rhythm, and strange sense of truth and justice in pithy human relations.
So for you Shakespeare fans, read it for the deeper themes. For those of you who can't stand the Bard, read it for fun and adventure.

FUNNY, SALTY, FISHY, SEXY... WITH A SHOT OF TEQUILA

Korean war vet buy a boat and becomes a shrimper in texas...his loves, his struggles, his close encounters of the sexual kind. Kind of a cross between Forrest Gump and To Have Not...but much better then both! Read it and laugh and cry. A book you will recommend but never loan out!
