There is something fascinating, almost magical, about the ability to speak. Though it is a common miracle played out each day, we are a long way from understanding the mysteries of language. Linguists have spent decades trying to unlock the codes of communication and have determined that human speech has very special properties that allow us to communicate at a rate 3 to 10 times faster than we could otherwise.

There is more to language than speech, however, and anthropologists have spent as much time considering the links between culture and perception. Teachers must have the skills to both understand and build on the language of their students. Through understanding students' language, teachers hold the key to understanding their learning.

TEXT FOCUS

This reader is designed to take teachers into the domains of linguists and anthropologists. We believe it is important to read the studies of researchers who have shaped our understanding of how we develop language and use it to communicate meaning. But it is equally important to take that knowledge into the classroom, exploring how language can be used for genuine learning, for sharing understanding with others, and for delighting in the magic of language. We have included many studies of language from classrooms, written by teachers. These stories help us all understand how language develops and changes over time—and how this knowledge can help us change classroom practice for the better.

To take the dialogue further, we invited three language researchers to tell us more about the process of their work—and, beyond their published research, what they are working on now, what motivates their research, and how they link it to their teaching lives. Our interviews with Shirley Brice Heath, Deborah Tannen, and Karen Gallas challenge us to engage in a "passion for the ordinary," exploring closely what is occurring all around us.

In A Map of the World, (1994; New York: Doubleday) Jane Hamilton writes about a two-year-old child, Lizzie, who is just learning to speak:

She was just beginning to speak in short sentences. She was at the juncture in her baby-
hood when it was possible she knew everything worth knowing. She understood the
texture of her family; she understood the territory and rage and love, although she
couldn't say much more than ball and moo, I want, pretty girl, and bad dog. As her
language shaped her experience and limited her ideas, she would probably lose most
of her wisdom for a time. . . Lizzie, at two, was on the brink, between stations. It was
tempting to think that if only they could speak, infants could take us back to their
beginning, to the forces of their becoming; they could tell us about patience, about
waiting and waiting in the dark. (p. 27)

The pieces in this reader can help give us a language to speak about language. We can understand that feeling a toddler has of losing knowledge for a time. Some of these readings will challenge you—as they have challenged us—to rethink some of your most cherished beliefs about language, learning, and culture. Learning about language has taught us much about patience, about waiting and listening closely to students so we can grasp multiple meanings beneath the words they use.

TEXT ORGANIZATION

Throughout this book we invite you to become a researcher of language in classrooms. We give guidance and many examples of teachers researching the language of their students. We've peppered the text with examples from novice teacher researchers who, like you, are just learning to analyze language—everything from purchasing tape recorders to coding tape transcripts to noting the way a head is held when someone laughs. We believe passionately that teachers can understand most deeply the lives and learning of their students if they are researchers within their own classrooms.

After the introduction, the book is divided into three parts. These sections represent different "stations" of knowledge classroom teachers need to move through as they work with their students. Part I, Historical Perspectives and Landmark Studies, highlights major theorists who have shaped our understanding of how language is acquired. Teachers need to know the wide range of language development that is normal. Too often, differences within this wide range are equated in schools with deficiencies.

Part II, Talk in Schools, is filled with examples of how teachers can change curriculum to support oral language development, as well as link oral language development to written language. In this section, teachers will see ways to listen carefully in the classroom, delight in the language communities they are a part of, and also learn to assess talk in the classroom in careful, systematic ways.

Part III, Sociocultural and Personal Perspectives, tackles some of the complex issues of language and culture. Language is indeed a social construction, and does not exist in a vacuum. As our society becomes more diverse, it is even more important for teachers to understand how that diversity will be expressed in students' language.

Sprinkled throughout the text are "Teacher Research Extensions"—examples of teachers applying the theories of language in the book to their own classrooms as they complete research studies.

We hope you learn important concepts and theories about language within these pages; however, we know the best learning, about your students' "territories and rages and loves," can come only as you learn to listen to them closely and patiently. We hope you enjoy this reader as much as we enjoyed putting it together. Our aim is to bring us all to a new place in understanding, awareness, and celebration of the language our students use.

Bone Wars: The Excavation Of Andrew Carnegie's Dinosaur, by Tom Rea

Winner of the 2002 Spur Award for Best Western Nonfiction - Contemporary

Less than one hundred years ago, Diplodocus carnegii—named after industrialist and philanthropist Andrew Carnegie—was the most famous dinosaur on the planet. The most complete fossil skeleton unearthed to date, and one of the largest dinosaurs ever discovered, Diplodocus was displayed in a dozen museums around the world and viewed by millions of people.

Bone Wars explains how a fossil unearthed in the badlands of Wyoming in 1899 helped give birth to the public’s fascination with prehistoric beasts. Rea also traces the evolution of scientific thought regarding dinosaurs, and reveals the double-crosses and behind-the-scenes deals that marked the early years of bone hunting.

With the help of letters found in scattered archives, Tom Rea recreates a remarkable story of hubris, hope, and turn-of-the-century science. He focuses on the roles of five men: Wyoming fossil hunter Bill Reed; paleontologists Jacob Wortman—in charge of the expedition that discovered Mr. Carnegie’s dinosaur—and John Bell Hatcher; William Holland, imperious director of the recently founded Carnegie Museum; and Carnegie himself, smitten with the colossal animals after reading a newspaper story in the New York Journal and Advertiser.

What emerges is the picture of an era reminiscent of today: technology advancing by leaps and bounds; the press happy to sensationalize anything that turned up; huge amounts of capital ending up in the hands of a small number of people; and some devoted individuals placing honest research above personal gain.

From Library Journal

When Pittsburgh steel tycoon Andrew Carnegie opened the Carnegie Institute in 1895, he hoped that his friend O.C. Marsh would provide a dinosaur for his new museum. However, Marsh died in 1898, leaving Carnegie without a dinosaur. Then the New York Post published a story about a colossal sauropod skeleton found in Wyoming by a man named Bill Reed. Carnegie was determined to get the fossil for his museum, but the University of Wyoming was just as determined. Carnegie's fortune eventually won the prize. When the dinosaur was excavated, it was named Diplodocus carnegii in his honor, and casts of the fossil were displayed around the world. Journalist Rea researched the tale of the Diplodocus fossil from original correspondence. He begins his book where the famous feud between Marsh and Edward Drinker Cope ended, skipping the earlier history of fossil discoveries in the Western United States, which has already been covered in David Wallace's The Bonehunters' Revenge (LJ 9/15/99) and Mark Jaffe's The Gilded Dinosaur (LJ 1/00). Recommended for academic and public libraries. Amy Brunvand, Univ. of Utah Lib., Salt Lake City

From Booklist
In the late 1800s, the discovery of dinosaur bones in Wyoming sparked a scientific gold rush among museums, universities, and individuals looking for a part of the glory and fame. Among the interested parties was steel magnate Andrew Carnegie, who, at that time, was looking to sell his business interests and build a museum. Carnegie's agent, a man named Holland, found himself drawn into a tumultuous race for the biggest and best skeleton yet. Very few tactics were considered too heinous to be employed by someone. As the museums and universities lured away and recruited one another's scientists and fossil prospectors, Holland explored loopholes in the land-claim laws that might allow him to take possession of land on which discoveries had already been made. Others, in the fields, smashed and destroyed dinosaur bones so that no one else would find them intact. Rea pieces together countless bits of information to construct an overall picture of this period of scientific discovery. Gavin Quinn

Rea pieces together countless bits of information to construct an overall picture of this period of scientific discovery." - Booklist"

An extensive bibliography and index enhance this truly enjoyable and informative history
By Midwest Book Review
Knowledgeably written by former journalist Tom Rea, Bone Wars: The Excavation And Celebrity Of Andrew Carnegie's Dinosaurs is the award- winning true story of how a Diplodicus carngeii fossil (named after famous industrialist and philanthropist Andrew Carnegie) found in the Wyoming badlands helped bring about public fascination with the great beasts of millennia past. Though Bone Wars is entirely nonfiction, it is so deftly written that it reads like a novel as it follows the battles of individuals, conflicting scientific theories, and even instances of backstabbing and double-crossing in the bone-hunting world of a century past. An extensive bibliography and index enhance this truly enjoyable and informative history, which is especially recommended for dinosaur and paleontology enthusiasts.

Bruce Millers Review
By A Customer
Where Dead Voices Gather
Nick Tosches
Little Brown and Company
writer: BRUCE MILLER
With his big bushy moustache and sun-weathered skin,
Tom Rea looks like one of the tough paleontologists staring
out of one of the black-and-white photographs in his book,
Bone Wars: The Excavation and Celebrity of Andrew Carnegie's
Dinosaur. His voice, though, has the soft polite tone of a
professional who has worked indoors for the better part of his
life. Imagining Rea to be like one of the men he wrote about is
probably a tribute to how vividly he portrays the people who
made Carnegie's dinosaur such a sensation. Rea is quick to
cite the abundance of letters he used as primary source material.
"The whole story is filled with interesting characters," says Rea.
"The personalities are so strong in those letters. I don't know if
it's the line of work that draws strong-minded people to it --
they certainly weren't in it for the money -- but in any case they
didn't want other people to get in the way of finding out what
the bones could tell them. Sometimes they disagreed quite strongly."
Rea comes from a family that knows geology and paleontology
-- his uncle is a geologist; his brother is a geologist at the
University of Michigan; geology was also his mother's avocation
-- but he came to write his book by following a less scientific
path. He grew up in Pittsburgh looking at Carnegie's dinosaur
at the Carnegie Museum. After graduating from Williams
College in Massachusetts in the early 1970s, Rea spent a few
summers visiting his uncle's ranch. He became a reporter for
the Wyoming's Casper Star-Tribune for the next 13 years,
though he maintained an amateur interest in geology and
paleontology. In 1990, he started working on an article
for the paper about, how Carnegie's famous dinosaur
made its way from Wyoming to Pittsburgh.
During his research, he became fascinated with the fossil digs
and disputes that surrounded the unearthing of the bones.
When he quit the paper in 1998, he wanted to write a
book about a number of these controversies,
but an editor suggested he focus on just one. Then, in 1999,
he came to the Carnegie Museum.
"Not until I got here did I realize how many letters they were,"
says Rea. "They had archives there that yielded all the
resources to write the book I wanted to write."
Correspondence between Carnegie and then-museum director
William Holland, who Rea says figures as "the Darth Vader of
the story," was right next door at the Carnegie Library. Rea
ended up using the archives of a number of Pittsburgh groups.
"[Holland's] secretary typed and saved every letter, even put
them in chronological order, so it was very easy to follow,"
Rea says.
The first person who caught Rea's attention was Bill Reed, the
tough, autodidactic Wyomingite who found Carnegie's dinosaur.
"He was a frontiersman who was dealing with people from the
East who didn't particularly respect him because he was a
Westerner," Rea says. "It was a different time back then. A guy
like Reed who'd been a buffalo hunter and snow shoveler on
the railroad was one acquaintance away from the richest man in
the world. Although the men were divided profoundly by class
and opportunity, they were still all connected."
The story of Carnegie's dinosaur was "a natural for a book,"
and Rea easily sold the idea to the University of Pittsburgh
Press, then wrote it in a year and a half. This is Rea's first
published book, though perhaps not his last. Now he is
considering writing book about Earl Douglas,
the paleontologist who found the Jurassic quarry
of dinosaur bones that is now the Dinosaur National Monument
in Utah and Colorado.

The author did an excellent job of researching 'who done what and when'
By JBB1
Not much intrigue in this book. The author did an excellent job of researching 'who done what and when', but the story lacked excitement. I was counting pages to read about midway. Someone who is really into the history of dinosaur bone hunting a century or so ago would probably get a lot out of this book, I did not. One thumb up.

Public speaking made easy.
By Casimir Kotarba
For most people, public speaking isn't something that comes easy. In fact, most people dislike giving speeches (putting it mildly). I was one of those people that didn't come easy for. But, after careful studying of the tips/techniques to give a good speech, ways to analyze your audience, and many other concepts, I was able to give successful speeches, with the confidence that being well prepared provides. The topics in this book are easy to understand and remember, explain nearly all of the issues important for a successful speech, and are arranged in a manner that allows the student to get more sophisticated as he/she progresses through the course without presenting an information overload in the beginning and without holding all of the useful information until the end. I think that this book is a valuable text not only for the student but for anyone that would like to improve their public speaking skills.

Not the best...
By LennoxFan1982
I have used in the past (and currently using) this publication for my Presentational Speaking for Engineering students and it's the only public speaking book that we have seemed to use in our Communication Studies Dept for this particular course. I am not sure why there is WAY too much "rhetoric" involved in this book. This book could use some tips for ESL students and could be geared a bit less towards rhetoric students and more towards a practical emphasis on presentational speaking. Especially when it comes to professional conferences and verbals on qualifying exams. Out of all the other public speaking texts, I find this one to be non-accessible, and out-of-touch with non-rhetoric students. But...it gets the job "done."

A must!
By Pour Boy
Definitely a big booster for me to score than A in my Communications class. Of course, that was probably because it was required of the professor and course to have this book, which make a lot of sense. Not hard concepts to grasp though, even for socially inept folks such as I.

I have the 1983 edition.
A very useful work.
Very interesting is that scolopendrium is described as acting on the spleen and that in an old Jewish work [ Ibn Ezra] a sort like action is described with a fascinating story!
