The Best Baxter Book Yet

I have read all of the books Karen Kingsbury has written about the Baxter Family. John comes to a decision about his relationship with Elaine. Ashley tries to keep the family happy and together. Katy and Dayne struggle with their seperation. Luke and Reagan try to keep their marriage together. All of other Baxters (and some of the Flannigans) are featured. An excellent book for everyone one, but especially for Kingsbury fans. The story of the Baxters is winding to a close. Karen Kingsbury has made the entire family seem real to us. The only bad news: Only one book remaining for those of us who love the Baxters!

This is Going to Hurt....

I've figured out something about Karen Kingsbury's storytelling skill. She is a master in foreshadowing. As I read Someday, I fell into that page turning trance that I tend to suffer from when opening one of her novels. With each chapter, I know something is going to happen that will rock the world of the characters and I somehow want to get to them to warn them, help them avoid it, because I've seen what Karen lets happen within the pages of her novels, and I know this isn't going to be good. Okay, yes, on one hand it's great because her characters grow and change...but the process. Aye-Yi-Yi!

Karen Kingsbury writes reality. I have a tendency, when life is really good, to look over my shoulder wondering if something lurks. Kingsbury incorporates that sense of impending upheaval into her books. My oldest daughter can't sit and read Kingsbury. She has to get up and pace on occasion.

If you haven't read her, and you like to be on the emotional edge of your seat....you might want to look into her. Blessedly she adds much hope to her stories and then pours on some grace. Someday is a tense continuation of the Baxter family saga. If you love the characters you will go for quite a ride.

About the Author
W. J. MINKOWYCZ is Professor of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Illinois at Chicago. He is Editor of Numerical Heat Transfer, International Journal of Heat and Mass Transfer, International Communication in Heat and Mass Transfer, and the Series in Computational and Physical Processes in Mechanics and Thermal Sciences. Professor Minkowycz has won numerous awards for excellence in teaching including the 1988 ASEE Ralph Coats Roe Award, and in 1993, he was recipient of the ASME Heat Transfer Memorial Award.

E. M. SPARROW is in the Mechanical Engineering Department of the University of Minnesota, where he has taught and researched since 1959. Professor Sparrow is a Max Jakob awardee, a member of the National Academy of Engineering, and holds the ranks of Morse Alumni Distinguished Teaching Professor and Institute Professor.

J. Y. MURTHY is currently Professor of Mechanical Engineering at Purdue University and has worked in both academia and industry in the area of computational fluid dynamics and heat transfer. Her particular interests lie in the development of general purpose, unstructured solution-adaptive mesh methods for problems of industrial relevance, and more recently, in the numerical simulation of sub-micron thermal transport. Professor Murthy serves on the editorial advisory board of Numerical Heat Transfer, and is an active member of the ASME.

A nice little book that explains a useful way of approaching estimates of software (or other) features/tasks. I've participated in the Team Estimation Game that Steve Bockman describes in this book. It's very effective, and a lot of fun, to boot. Steve presents the "game," as well as some background and context around it, in a concise and understandable fashion. A quick read, worth all 99 pennies... and then some.

I was hoping for more - eventually someone somewhere needs to set a budget and have a good likelihood that they get what they asked for completed within the budget. The number one place I've seen budgets blown is in discovered work - and developers not being able or willing to discuss renegotiating of terms, whether that's time or money.

Steve Bockman invented one of the most significant improvements to Scrum since it was devised.

Steve’s Team Two-Pass Release Sizing method (also known as Story Sizing, Relative Estimation, Rapid Release Planning, The Team Estimation Game, or simply The Steve Bockman Method) has replaced Planning Poker for any number of teams across the country. It is, for most of us who have used it, a big leap forward. While Planning Poker was an amazing innovation - it reduces the cost of estimating dramatically from the multi-day estimating efforts we used to do - it still takes too long.

As with Planning Poker, Team Two-Pass Release Sizing prompts rich conversation that takes advantage of the wisdom of the team. And as with Planning Poker, engaging the entire team guarantees that everyone gains a sense of the entire project in a remarkably short time. This technique’s two passes deliver a second round of validation - both rounds in less time than Planning Poker took.

I’ve been using Team Two-Pass Release Sizing with teams for a half dozen years. The technique is so rapid that an entire project’s stories can be sized in just two or three hours.

The Work of Christ - A Great Overview

R.C. Sproul's latest contribution to Biblical studies, The Work of Christ, is a solid, no nonsense overview of the life of Christ from birth to His second coming. Sproul's goal was to examine the pinnacles of Jesus's sojourn on earth in relationship to his redemptive work that He completed through the cross. But most importantly Sproul wants us to be able to understand exactly what it is that Christ did for us through his life. Sproul, through this book, reminds us that Christ's entire life was all part of the redemptive work and needs to be looked at and understood at a more profound level.

The Work of Christ would be an excellent study for a new believer or a great refresher for a seasoned saint. Each chapter examines a pivotal moment in Christ's life and the works He accomplished during that time. From Bethlehem to His return, Sproul breaks it down so we can see the importance of every aspect of Christ's works.

To be honest, The Work of Christ provided no new insights for me - it was an excellent overview - but nothing that made me stop and go "Wow". But that's okay because what I loved about this book is that, after each chapter, there is a thorough outline of the important points that you needed to understand about that section. Even better there is a series of study questions that point you to more scriptures, allowing you to expand your study, if that's what you desire. If the reader takes advantage of these end-of-chapter studies, he will get even more from this book.

The Work of Christ will benefit anyone wanting a deeper understanding of what Christ did for us. A great addition to the bookshelf of any believer.
